KNEE SURGERY

The Tightrope CCL procedure is a minimally invasive and improved method for extracapsular stabilization of the CCL. We also perform the TTA (tibial tuberosity advancement) is a bone cutting procedure that changes the knee's anatomy to alter the forces on the knee. We also perform FHO (femoral head) surgery and OCD (shoulder surgery). We have a canine and feline physical rehabilitation program for your pet's post operative needs.

LASER SURGERY

We offer laser surgery for all of our surgical procedures. A safe and effective procedure that uses technology to create incisions. This specialized 'cutting' can be used for almost any procedure.

LASER DECLAWING AND TENDONECTOMY

We believe that in many cases removing the toenails of cats can be avoided. In the cases where behavioral modification and training can not correct unwanted scratching and clawing behaviors, we offer declawing and tendonectomy. Laser declawing is available at our Temple Terrace Animal & Bird Hospital office. We also offer the Tendonectomy procedure. In this procedure in lieu of removing the entire toenail, we cut the tendon in the toe that causes retraction. This procedure is advised for older cats, heavier cats and is considered 'less traumatic'. The healing time associated with this procedure is significantly less than conventional declaw or laser declaw. Call us for more information.

IMMUNIZATION, EARLY DETECTION AND WELLNESS CARE

We strive to prevent illness whenever possible. The time and effort invested in Early Detection and Wellness programs has rewards for both pets and owners. Annual and Semi Annual health plans are individualized for our patients, because not all pets have the same needs. Our annual and semi annual health plans are designed specifically for your pet based on age, breed, weight, lifestyle and travel habits as well as genetic predisposition to disease. Screening for heart disease diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease are just a few things that are included in our plans. Also, Antibody Titers can be performed to determine whether your pet should be vaccinated each year. These Titers are also an excellent solution to pets that have reactions to vaccines.

SURGERY

We offer the most advanced surgical techniques and technology. All patients are carefully screened for safety, and anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet. Surgical services and facilities include: fully trained veterinary and technical staff, to ensure the safest, most efficient, state-of-the-art procedures for your pet; heated surgery tables for greater comfort; advanced sterilization techniques; ECG, blood pressure, respiratory and oxygen saturation monitors are routinely used; intensive after surgery care and full blood testing.

DENTAL CARE

Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. We use modern and safe ultrasonic units to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line. Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity. Advanced dental care and dental radiography is available. And as always, anesthesia and monitoring are state of the art and of the utmost importance.

BIRDS, REPTILES, RABBITS AND SMALL MAMMALS

Veterinary medicine for exotic pets is growing as the popularity of these animals increase. With better public education in health, nutritional and environmental management, all species have a greater chance for living longer and healthier lives. Dr. Peter Helmer is a board certified avian and exotic pet specialist. He is one of only about 150 veterinarians worldwide that have demonstrated the knowledge and expertise necessary to achieve board certification in avian and exotic veterinary practice. Dr. Helmer has over 10 years of experience in the treatment of avian and exotic pets. He has presented lectures at state and national veterinary conferences on multiple topics including avian and reptile anesthesia, clinical techniques, orthopedic surgery, and diagnostic imaging. Dr. Helmer welcomes new patients on either a primary care or referral care basis. Avian grooming such as beak, wing and nail trims are available everyday.

EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE

In any emergency, seconds count. Our experienced staff is trained for these situation and knows the ABCs of basic life support - Airway, Breathing, Circulation/Cardiac compressions. Emergency care is offered during regular business hours. In addition, we use the services of a local, fully staffed emergency center.

IMAGING SERVICES

Being able to 'see' on the inside of a patient is paramount to providing outstanding medical care. We have digital radiography, ultrasound and echocardiography and endoscopy available. Our veterinarians are trained in the use of these advanced diagnostic tools which could save you a trip to a referral practice. BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE

Illness doesn't always have a physical cause. We can refer you and your pet to a trained animal behaviorists who help determine the cause of such disorders as separation anxiety and obsessive behavior, and then develop a treatment regimen for the client.

BLOOD DONOR PROGRAM

We maintain a supply of blood for all types of pets in case of emergency. The blood is collected from donor pets that live with their owners, and all blood is carefully screened for disease. We are also always accepting dog donors, just call us for details.

HOUSE CALLS and MOBILE SERVICES

We are able to come to you if you are unable to come to us. We offer house calls if you are unable to bring your pet to the clinic, or we can pick up and deliver your pet from your home to provide the care requested or needed. We also deliver pet food and medications for free.

MICROCHIPPING

Microchips have helped reunite thousands of pets with their families. We offer the most widely used microchip products to increase the chances of a safe recovery. The procedure is safe and quick. Simply call ahead for an appointment. We recommend that all pets, even those that do not venture outside, are microchipped. Microchips are popular, reliable, and effective ways to permanently identify our pets. The chip is small, about the size and shape of a grain of rice, and is easily inserted under your pet's skin. Once the microchip is in place, the owner must register the microchip with the national data base. When a pet is scanned with a microchip scanner an identification number will appear. This number is linked to a national data base that has all of the owner's contact information. We recommend to annually update your information with the data base, and have your pet's microchip checked at each annual visit.

NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING

Some pets require special food, and all pets benefit from a balanced diet. Our trained and certified staff is available to help you choose the right diet for your pet to keep him or her happy, healthy and active. If your pet needs to lose a few pounds, just schedule a consult with one of technical team for a program that is safe and easy for your loved one. Now there is a prescription available for those dogs who are having difficulty losing weight called Slentrol. ULTRASOUND

This non-invasive, state-of-the-art technology uses sound waves to painlessly examine specific internal organs, primarily the heart and abdominal organs. Pregnancy exams are also available.

ACUPUNCTURE AND HERBAL MEDICINE

Acupuncture is the insertion of small, sterile, stainless steel needles into a patient at precise locations and depths on the body. The insertion of the needles at these points alters the body's biochemical and physiological properties primarily through the stimulation of the central nervous system. Acupuncture has been utilized in veterinary practice for over 3000 years to treat a variety of animal conditions, and may also be utilized as an adjunct to standard medical/surgical treatments of disease, or as a preventative measure. The American Veterinary Medical Association considers veterinary acupuncture a valid modality within the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery. All animals may benefit from acupuncture. Acupuncture is indicated for functional problems that involve pain, non-infectious inflammation (such as arthritis and allergies) and neurological dysfunctions (such as paralysis). Other indications include but are not limited to: musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, skin, neurologic, respiratory, ocular, endocrine, reproductive, behavioral, chronic, non-curative, urinary tract and numerous other disorders. Additionally, we offer herbal medicine as an alternative to conventional medications.
